Bio

Chinese.
Dogs.

I never know what to write on a bio- I always feel so conceded.  For the past few years I’ve kind of thought of myself as fairly boring, so maybe if I blog a bit I might actually find myself. I also have the memory of a goldfish, so this is, I suppose, a way for me to remember my life.

Where to begin about me? I guess from the top down.

WORK
I work for Disney World. It’s nowhere near as lame as it might sound. Granted there are a lot of jobs here that are fairly run of the mill, but I work in entertainment. No, I don’t perform, I’m on the technical side of things. For the most part I spend my time making sure Cinderellas Castle stays lit and looking pretty. Or maybe I’m lighting up the streets of Frontierland. Occasionally I’m working on a rig for a special events. Every once in a while you might be able to catch me with fireworks. To me, this is definitely one of the coolest jobs in the world. Don’t get me wrong, it can be frustrating as all hell sometimes, but I love it.

EDUCATION
Everyone always talks about how great college was. I hated it. Every Minute. Northern Illinois University is my alma mater, theatrical lighting design was my expertise. Don’t get me wrong, I learned a lot. It was just chaotic and full of professors who were scared of their students. I apparently asked to many questions.

Yup. I’m here to take your job away. Sorry. I’ve always dreamed of teaching in a school in the middle of a corn field . . .

There are two professors there that I did (and still do) respect. Benny was my lighting professor. He taught me to recreate, to ask why and to find the fights worth fighting and, more importantly, when to keep my mouth shut. He has the naturally ability to take things with a grain of salt, push you to perfection, and still make it seem easy. I’m somewhat envious of that.

Sahin didn’t actually teach me anything. He showed me. According to him everyone is an artist, they just need to be shown how to bring it out.  He showed me how to communicate what I have thunk up in my head. He showed me that style is just passe and the industrial look is overrated. I hate that I love the industrial look. Stupid juxtaposition. Why do you have to be so alluring?

PERSONAL LIFE
I’m fortunate enough to have the most supportive family know to mankind. While they don’t always agree with what I do, they will always back me up. And I never thank them enough for that.

While she’ll disagree I’m the lucky one to have my girlfriend Kira. Supportive, intelligent and pretty beyond all belief with a heart the size of Texas.

I also have a little wiener dog aptly named Oscar. Smart, stubborn and a knack for finding trouble, I wouldn’t take him any other way.

I am not addicted to coffee. I just prefer the comfort of constantly having a warm cup in my hand. Einsteins Neighborhood Blend always makes a good gift. I’ve also saved hundreds of dollars on buying my own espresso machine and passing on Starbucks.

I’m an unfortunate creature of habit desperately trying to break the norm. I’ve been somewhat successful.

I love electronics. If it carries some sort of electrical current, I want to know about it. The LHC might possibly open some new secrets to the universe and why the answer is 42. If I wasn’t working for Disney, I would probably be back working for Apple.

I’m a huge Google advocate and slightly addicted to Apple products.

As much as I seem to be a nerd, and I’m sure I am, I love the outdoors. There’s nothing like waking up and making breakfast (and coffee) on a smokey fire pit. Everything I learned about life I learned at camp.

I’m an amateur chef. Except I cant make Jello. Go figure.

I’m trying to get more into photography and hopefully I’ll soon have a photo journal up here.
